GRAND SLAM & STAY
AN INSIDER'S GUIDE TO THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN

There is no better sound in January in Melbourne than that of a powerful backhand or tennis shoes shuffling and sliding across Rod Laver, Margaret Court or Melbourne Arenas at the Melbourne Park Tennis Centre.

The Australian Open is a must see event in Melbourne, and we want to make sure that you see the best of the Grand Slam when you stay in one of our spacious suites at Stamford Plaza Melbourne hotel.

Whether you are heading to week 1 or 2 of the Australian Open, we’ve created the ultimate Insider's Guide that will see you courtside and beyond for the first Grand Slam Event of the year.

Getting to the Australian Open

The Australian Open is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, and so getting to Rod Laver, Margaret Court or Melbourne Arenas (or any court at Melbourne Park) couldn’t be easier.

Staying centrally with Stamford Plaza Melbourne hotel will position you perfectly, with access to a number of free trams that will take you to Jolimont station where you can complete the journey with a short stroll through the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground).

For adventurers looking to make the most of their Melbourne stay, you might want to get to the Australian Open by heading to Federation Square and walking along the Yarra River to the official entrance at Birrarung Marr. Keep your eyes out here for all the promotional gifts and fantastic photo opportunities with the huge AO sign. Our friendly concierge staff are always available to point you in the right direction based on what you want to see and what the weather is looking like. Stamford Plaza Melbourne hotel is in a very enviable location for those travelling to The Australian Open.

Rod Laver Arena

Despite what you see on television, there are more courts than just the three main arenas, although these are where you will see the big names and bigger matches during the Australian Open tournament.

With the scoreboard changing with every game, who you will see for the tickets you have purchased will be known closer to the day. If you have an idea of which court for which you would like to get tickets (Margaret Court Arena  for example) this will narrow down who you see and when. Another consideration is the sun, as not all areas of the court seating are covered. If you want to see every sweat bead from your favourite player, then get tickets in the Super Row, Category 1 or 2 - but be prepared with your sunscreen and a hat! Categories 3 and 4 (upper-tier seating) will still give you a great view of the action, with sun cover.

Australian Open Tickets

While coverage of the major seeds playing at the Australian Open dominates the global media, you can enjoy a great day out without breaking the bank. If you want to soak up the carnival atmosphere, purchase a Ground Pass ticket which will allow you to get everywhere but the major courts. There are many outside courts that you can plant yourself to see great tennis with this pass. To see the top seeds, you will want to purchase Stadium Tickets to see certain tennis players or final slots in the second week.

AO Live Stage

The Australian Open celebrates tennis with more than just tennis! Each year the organisers arrange incredible music lineups to the AO Live Stage. Linger longer to see these acts, or grab a ticket based on the lineup set for that day. The Australian Open is known for bringing great talent to the stages each year. The open AO Live Stage is a buzz of activity all day and night long, located at Birrarung Marr. See the line up here

Australian Open Activities for Kids and Families

There is more to The Australian Open is more than just heated matches and Aperol Spritzes', with so much entertainment and activities planned for your little travellers. The Australian Open for kids can be whatever you want it to be, and children can join you at Rod Laver for as little as $5 for a Ground Pass. Head to the AO Ballpark for a climb and a play, or partake in the huge rides at the AO Hilltop. There is even an AO Tennis Camp that kicks off at the end of the Open for any budding players looking to level up. If you don’t want to take your eyes off Federer’s serve, get your kids excited about AO Kids Club so that you can make the most of the day while your little ones are off enjoying themselves.
